After reading this short article, you can decide whether one of these is right for you by making an informed decision.

Synology NAS DS220+

The Synology DS220+ is designed for the home user or small office with a relatively low budget. Despite its modest hardware base, it is still fast enough to run modern applications. In addition to its high-speed connectivity, it comes with 2GB DDR4 system memory, expandable up to a maximum of 6GB.

The DS220+’s front cover hides the two drive bays, leaving room for two USB 3.2 ports and a Kensington security slot. The back plate includes a dedicated fan for cooling. Moreover, its drive bays can be removed without tools.

The Synology DS220+ is a NAS that aims to be both a storage device and an entertainment hub, with its ability to handle multimedia content. In addition, it allows you to set up apps to manage your photo library and computer backups. The DS220+’s USB copy button can be configured to automatically back up files when you connect a USB flash drive, which is a fantastic feature.

The DS220+ (and the DS920+) come with various software, including Synology Photos, which helps you backup your photos to the NAS. This app is available for DSM 7.x, and once installed, you’ll have access to your NAS photos on your mobile device. You can even upload your pictures to the NAS from your mobile device. As a result, the DS220+ is a good choice for home users providing seamless performance.

Synology NAS DS920+

If you’re looking for an affordable NAS for home and small business use, you can’t do much better than the Synology DS920+. The Synology DS920+ NAS combines toolless design and user-friendly features to meet the needs of any home power user. It is equipped with dual-Gigabit ports, which may be bonded into one 2GB port through the DSM software. The device would benefit from 2.5GB ethernet ports but it is the only negative I can come up with. The two-gigabit ports make this NAS plenty fast enough to play 4K video throughout your home network.

As a home server, the DS920+ boasts a lot of features. Its front facia has four drive bays and supports 3.5-inch HDDs, 2.5-inch HDDs, and even two M.2 SSDs. However, it is essential to note that neither the DS920+ nor the DS220+ mentioned above come with hard drives.

The NAS can be expanded to 9 drives with an optional DX517 expansion unit from Synology. The DS920+ also has dual 9-cm fans to cool down the device and ensure a perfect running temperature when it is on 24/7/365. Equipped with an Intel Celeron J4125 quad-core processor, it can burst up to 2.7 GHz. There is also an eSATA port on the back for external connectivity.

DSM 7.x Software Features

The DS920+ has many multimedia applications, including Surveillance Station. It can also handle a variety of other software, such as Plex Media Server. Its power consumption is low, consuming 32.17 W on access and a ridiculously low 9.69 W during HDD hibernation. Also supporting this NAS as a home unit, its noise level registers at 19.8 dB when fully loaded with HDDs in an idle state, making it one of the quietest NAS’ on the market.

Another positive feature of the DS920+ that you should look for is the file system. You can choose either ext4 or Btrfs. It can be configured to support several RAID types, including RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 5 and 6. The DS920+ is also compatible with Synology’s Hybrid RAID, which uses mdadm and LVM to maximize storage capacity.

The DS920+ is one of the best-selling NAS servers on Amazon. It has the right balance between hardware and value and offers all the necessary features for a power user. For this reason, it’s an excellent choice for 4-bay NAS servers and my recommended NAS.
